10 Tips For Maintaining Your Home While You’re On Vacation

Vacation time is great for taking care of the things around your house. Vacationers can benefit from checking off their to-do list with these tips for maintaining their home while they’re away.

Make sure to change your air filter.

One of the best ways to make sure your home is in good shape while you’re away is to change your air filter. Air filters should be changed every 3 months, but it’s easy enough once you know what to do:

Remove the old one and replace it with a new one. You can buy these at any hardware store, or if there’s something wrong with the existing filter (like, say, a bird has built a nest inside), then just throw out that bad boy right away!

Set up an auto-payment plan so that this doesn’t fall through the cracks between vacations in future years.

Check the status of your home appliances and fill in any empty spaces in their fuel tanks.

Check that there’s enough water in the hot water tank, so you don’t have any problems when you return from vacation.

Make sure that there is no mold or mildew growing around where pipes are located, as this could lead to major problems later on down the road (and cost you more money).

Be sure your garage/car park is protected.

There are a number of ways you can do this, and they don’t have to cost much money:

Install a simple door stop on the inside of your garage door so that intruders can’t just walk in as easily as they might think they can.

Use a garage door alarm that comes with sensors that detect when someone is trying to get into the garage or car park (and then sounds an alarm). These alarms are relatively inexpensive and easy-to-use; just attach them where needed, turn them on and forget about them until later!

Install motion sensor lights around the perimeter of your property so that anyone entering will be seen before they enter; this will help keep burglars away from valuable items inside your home while also providing light so no one trips over anything dangerous while walking around outside at night!

Get yourself a car alarm system – these devices are designed specifically for vehicles and come equipped with remote monitoring options allowing homeowners peace of mind knowing that if anything happens while away from home then notifications will be sent right away via email/text message alerts (or whatever other method works best).

Turn off the water heater, or at least lower the temperature to a safe setting.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but don’t forget to turn it back on when you return. If you’re not sure how long you’ll be gone, consider installing an automatic timer that will automatically turn off and on throughout each day while you’re away. These devices are usually priced as low as $30, so they’re worth every penny if they prevent flooding in your home!

Don’t forget that your pets need water too!

You know that you need to think about your pets when you leave. But did you know that they can go for days without food and water? Make sure that they have enough water, especially if it’s hot outside or if the weather is temperate but humid (or both).

Check on them regularly! If possible, talk to a neighbor or friend who will check on them while you’re away so they can let us know how things are going.

If you have a pet sitter, please make sure that they are familiar with your pets’ food and water requirements, the number of times that they should be let out during the day, and any other special considerations. If possible, have them set up a webcam so we can see what’s going on in your home while you’re away!

Change out any batteries in your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and kitchen fire extinguisher.

You should change the batteries in your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and kitchen fire extinguishers at least once a year. If you can’t remember when the last time was that you did this, then do it now!

It’s easy to forget about small household appliances like these when we’re on vacation–but changing out their batteries will help ensure that they work properly when we return home from our travels.

Do a thorough cleaning before you leave, from top to bottom!

  • Give the kitchen a thorough cleaning.
  • Wipe down all surfaces and appliances, including the stovetop, fridge and microwave oven.
  • Clean out your dishwasher if it hasn’t been cleaned in a while (or ever).
  • Vacuum under every table and chair in the house — including those in closets!

Secure all windows and doors with readily available tools like window chains, door stops and peepholes.

A door stop is a simple but effective tool that can help prevent doors from slamming. A peephole allows you to see who is outside before opening the door, and a chain lock secures the door against intruders.

A doorknob lock is an essential part of any door security system. It allows you to lock and unlock your door from the inside, which is useful for keeping unwanted visitors out.

Stay up-to-date on routine maintenance tasks as well as any repairs that may be needed while you’re away.

  • Make sure to check on the status of your home appliances. You don’t want to come back from vacation only to find out that your air conditioning unit has given up completely and all your furniture is ruined by mold!
  • Change your air filter regularly, especially if you have pets or allergies in the house. Changing out these filters helps keep allergens out of the air that we breathe every day–and who wants their family members sneezing all over each other? Not me! Plus it’s good for our lungs too!
  • Check the status of any appliances (like stoves/refrigerators) or outdoor items like grills that may need repairs before they cause more extensive damage or get yourself hurt personally!
  • At least once every two weeks, check on air conditioners/heaters, roofing shingles and chimney caps to ensure they don’t need repairs or replacement before they cause more extensive damage to your property or get you hurt personally!

Make sure your mobile home insurance is taken care of!

If something goes wrong in your absence, you want to be able to call the insurance company and get help right away. While you’re at it, turn off the lights and lock up any valuables that are left out in plain sight like laptops or jewelry. You don’t want your house to be an easy target for burglars!
